April 2018 - AT Backpacking Trip, Salisbury, CT (Northbound)
The April backpacking trip was well attended again this year. In total we had 38 on the trek including 22 Scouts and 16 adults. We met in the St. George parking lot at 5:30am Saturday morning to pick up gear and tents and then as our caravan headed up to Salisbury, CT. it looked like it was going to be raining all day and we hoped that the weather would cooperate. After a short hike to the trail head we broke up into smaller hiking groups and headed north on the Appalachian Trail. The first few hours were a slow and steady climb with a short but pretty steep climb up to Lion's Head where we enjoyed a nice view. The remainder of the hike to the campsite was not overly difficult and we made it there in good time. After everyone arrived at the Brassie Brook campsite we set up our tents, filtered water and then headed back on the trail northbound toward the top of Bear Mountain. After dinner the temperature began to quickly drop and as the wind picked up there was a clap of thunder and a flash of lightening and then a constant rain began. Most retreated to their tents for an early evening and to get out of the rain. Sunday morning we woke up to more rain and temperatures in the 40's. We quickly broke camp, ate breakfast, and we were back on the trail by 8:30am. By the time we arrived back at the trail head the rain had stopped, the temperature was much warmer, and the sun began to break through the clouds. This was a fun first backpacking trip for many of the newest Scouts in our troop and enjoyed by all those that were able to attend!
April 2018 - Fishing Derby Campout at Deer Lake Scout Reservation
The 2018 Deer Lake Fishing Derby started off Friday evening with an outside temperature that was up to about 50 degrees and kind of strange since it was snowing just a few hours earlier at the camp. We had 19 Scouts from the troop attend and 4 adult leaders. After a fun and filling cracker barrel Friday evening the boys went to sleep relatively early (9:30-10:00pm). Saturday morning was quite cold for an April morning (in the low 30s) and the boys were up by 6:00am and made the trek down to the dining hall for a 7:00am pancake breakfast. Most of the day was overcast but the temperature rose into the low 40's with sun in the afternoon. The fishing derby was great fun with many of the boys hooking one or two trout. A few also won prizes during the derby. Saturday afternoon included work on rank requirements, cooking and a hike to Fat Man Squeeze. Scouts that caught fish during the derby prepared their fish and cooked it in the fire for part of their dinner. There was not a lot of meat on some of those trout! After dinner the boys had a campfire and again were in their beds by 10:00pm. Sunday morning the boys were up making breakfast by 6:30am and after breakfast broke camp and carried all troop gear down to the parking lot before parent pickup. The weekend was a lot of fun and many of the boys said that they were already thinking about the event for next year before leaving for home.

For our conservation service hours we cleared brush and lower tree limbs behind the Deer Lake boat house and thinned out some of the dead trees and overgrowth. We also learned about the differences between conservation and preservation from Ranger Clifton.
